Presentation Research

When looking at the two video’s in terms of mis en scene, we found that;
Katy Perry – Last Friday Night:
-          Fade transitions used to show the change of time, fragmented story line
-          A wide range of shots, wide shots, micro shots, long shots, establishing shots
-          Certain shots were used to stand out more than others, for example, the establishing shot followed a paper boy around the street, introducing the audience the entire scene
-          In terms of colour: bright, bold colours used, colours used in clothing allowed certain characters to stand out more than others
-          There is a long introduction and finish to the video, enhancing the story line and the comical edge to it
-          The clothing worn is very stereotypical for the characters that are being portrayed
-          Props are what would be expected in this kind of setting, the party scene, however they are very over exaggerated, this also shows a relation to the lyrics
Lady Gaga – Just Dance:
-          Smaller introduction, but still sets the scene and brings it to the idea that the video will be telling a story
-          The clothing is very ‘out there’, bold and unique, along with the stage make up, however its only lady gaga that is presented this way, other characters within the video are in more neutral clothing
-          Again, the video is based mainly within a house during some form of house party, the scenes show many young people intoxicated by alcohol, as did katyperry’s.
-          Like Katy Perry’s video, there is a strong use of props, and again these are very exaggerated matching the lyrics of the song
-          In terms of shots: there is a wide range of shots, high and low angle shots, close ups, establishing shots, mid shots and wide shots
After watching both very closely we found a number of similarities and differences, the similarities are what we were looking most closely at as we believe these are the main conventions of a dance pop music video.
When thinking about our video we have related these elements to our ideas and have decided to try and incorporate them into our music video. Having a narrative to a video is very effective and we believe it draws in the audience very well, adding the comical edge to it gives it a unique twist and again, we have reasons to believe it will keep the audience watching and draw them in to the video and the music. Like a lot of filmed footage we are going to take advantage of all the camera shots available and use them to enhance certain elements of the music and visuals, using a wider variety of camera shots and transitions will allow the music video to flow smoothly, hopefully with no faults. As the location in both of these was at a house party we have considered this, however we are not a 100% on the narrative yet so its currently between the house or the streets. We have taken both locations into consideration and thought carefully about the risks and hazards we may encounter when filming.
